The painting depicts a young woman with plated hair holding a large white weasel also called an ermine in her arms. Gallerani is widely recognised as the mistress of the Duke of Milan or Ludovico Sforza. Painted around 1489-1490 the Lady with an Ermine was only a few of the Renaissance paintings crafted by Leonardo da Vinci.
The Lady With An Ermine came into Polish hands in 1800 after it was bought by the young Prince Adam Czartoryski later a hero in the fight for Polish independence during his tour of Italy.
The subject of the portrait is Cecilia Gallerani painted at a time when she was the mistress of Ludovico Sforza Duke of Milan and Leonardo was in the service of the duke.
